Putting God First In All Things

Another act that moves the hand of God in our favour is the act that shows that God is truly our priority. Many believers claim to love God, but their daily decisions reveal what actually occupies the first place in their hearts. Jesus asked Peter a very direct question after the resurrection: “Lovest thou me more than these?” (John 21:15). That question is still relevant today because it reveals the issue of priority. What comes first in your life? When important decisions confront you, who or what occupies the first place in your thinking? Acts that show that God is truly number one in a believer’s life attract the attention of heaven. When God sees that He is not competing with other priorities in your life, His hand begins to move in your favour in unusual ways. This principle is deeply spiritual because it reveals the order of your heart. It shows whether you see yourself as the owner of your life or merely as a steward of what God has entrusted to you.

One practical area where this priority is often revealed is in the way believers handle their resources. Many people say they tithe, but the deeper question is whether they truly place God first. The principle of the tithe is not simply about giving one-tenth; it is about giving the first tenth. When the tithe becomes the first portion, it represents a spiritual declaration that God comes before every other claim on our lives. It says, “Lord, You are number one, and everything else follows after You.” This act is more than a financial transaction; it is a spiritual exchange that demonstrates trust and honour toward God. When a believer consistently places God first in this way, it sends a powerful signal to heaven that God occupies the rightful place in that life. Such acts move the hand of God because they demonstrate a heart that recognises His lordship.

The Bible repeatedly emphasises this principle of priority. Jesus said, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33). When God truly occupies the first place in a believer’s life, other things begin to align properly. Decisions become clearer, direction becomes stronger, and divine favour begins to manifest. A believer who puts God first does not approach Him as a last resort after every other option has failed. Instead, he deliberately begins with God in every matter. Such a life demonstrates faith, honour, and reverence for the Lord. And when heaven sees a believer whose heart places God above every other pursuit, it often moves the hand of God to act powerfully on that person’s behalf.

THOUGHT TO PONDER

Is God truly the first priority in my life, or do I approach Him only when other options fail? What practical step can I take today to place God first?

PRAYER

Father, help me establish You as the highest priority in my life. Teach me to seek You first in every decision and every pursuit, so that my life continually honours You, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
