The matter of conscience is of great importance if you will apprehend what God has prepared for you in your Christian journey. Many believers are thinking of breakthrough, promotion, ministry, calling, destiny, and enlargement, but they are not checking the condition of the spirit through which these things must be handled. Your conscience is critical to your spiritual health. A man may have gifts, zeal, exposure, and opportunities, yet fail in the matter of a good conscience. That failure is not small before God. Paul said he exercised himself to have always a conscience void of offence toward God and men. That means conscience is not left to chance; it is maintained deliberately. I want you to take heed to this truth because a glorious destiny can be hindered by a wounded, weak, or careless conscience.

Many people treat their physical health like a spare tyre. They do not bother to check it until trouble comes, and then they discover too late that what should have helped them is also bad. You may have experienced a flat tyre and replaced it without stress because your extra tyre was in good condition. But imagine being stranded because the spare tyre itself was flat. That is how many people treat their spiritual health. They assume everything is alright because there are no alarming symptoms. Yet not every sickness announces itself loudly. Some terrible conditions operate quietly until collapse comes. Spiritual health works the same way. It may not be immediately obvious that your love is waxing cold, your sensitivity is reducing, or your conscience is losing strength. This is why the message of conscience must come out strongly in a time when the end is near and many hearts are cooling off towards God.

Make a quality decision to maintain your spiritual health. It is not enough that people call you a Christian; let them also be able to say you have a conscience. Let your name not only be associated with church attendance, service, or religious language, but with truth, sincerity, and inward uprightness. A living conscience is a treasure in these last days because seducing spirits are looking for careless hearts. Don’t wait until a crisis exposes what you refused to maintain in secret. Be a hearer and a doer of the Word. Examine the arguments inside you when you want to do wrong. Don’t silence that inner witness. Feed your spirit with the Word, obey the Holy Ghost promptly, and keep short accounts with God and men. The man who preserves his conscience preserves a major instrument by which God keeps him straight, usable, and safe for the future that He has prepared for him in Christ Jesus by grace.

THOUGHT TO PONDER: What is the present condition of my conscience before God? Am I maintaining my spiritual health or waiting for trouble to expose neglect?

PRAYER: Father, help me to maintain a living conscience before You. Keep my heart tender, my spirit healthy, and my life free from offences toward You and men in Jesus’ name.
