Listen while praying, commuting, or preparing for the day.God has given us certain things in the Bible and in our spiritual life that help us ascertain and gauge our spiritual condition, and one of them is the conscience. Your conscience is very important. Do you have a conscience? You may meet a rough person who still has a conscience, and you may meet a nice person who has lost his conscience. Don’t be deceived by niceness without truth. The worst kind of person to relate with is a person who appears pleasant but has lost the inward restraint that should answer to God. In the latter times, the Spirit warns that some will depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their conscience seared with a hot iron. That is a fearful condition, and no serious believer should treat it lightly.
When you first got born again, one of the things God did was to awaken your conscience by cleansing and purging it. Your conscience is that voice of the spirit inside you; that thing that argues with you when you want to do wrong. Every human being has a conscience, whether born again or not. Even hardened people sometimes stop and say, “No, don’t do that; that is not fair.” That is the conscience disturbing them. The conscience is God’s representative inside a man. You can say it is God’s eye inside a man that sees everything, and God’s scale of judgment inside every man. It begins to respond even before you do anything, as your thoughts start moving in the wrong direction. At salvation, God restores the conscience to its original setting, the way He intended it to function under truth. From that day forward, you are responsible for maintaining that setting and not corrupting it through repeated compromise, excuses, and stubborn disobedience.
Builders use instruments to measure whether a surface is straight, and your conscience was designed to measure straightness or crookedness inside you. When you get born again and know the truth, your conscience separates actions into right and wrong. But you must not keep resetting it downward. Every time you argue against the Word, excuse disobedience, or practise what the Bible condemns, something inside you begins to adjust. If you continue, the struggle becomes weaker until evil feels normal. That is how a person develops an allowance for wrong. Don’t let your conscience become an instrument that no longer measures truth. Bring it back to God’s standard through repentance, obedience, and the Word. Let your conscience remain tender enough to correct you before sin hardens you, because the man God can defend is the man who still trembles when God whispers to him.
THOUGHT TO PONDER: Is my conscience still measuring my life by God’s Word? Have I reset my inner standard to accommodate what God condemns?
PRAYER: Lord, restore and strengthen my conscience by Your Word. Deliver me from excuses and compromise, and keep my heart tender enough to respond when You correct me in Jesus’ name.
