One of the fastest ways to lose a soul is to start with “dos and don’ts.” Some believers want the sinner to bath before entering the bathroom. They want him to stop smoking, stop drinking, stop womanising, stop lying, before he can come to Jesus. That is upside down. You don’t wash a fish before you catch it; you catch it first, then you clean it. A man does not change to be saved; he is saved to change. Sin is not a stain you wipe with moral soap; it is a nature that needs a new birth. And since “all have sinned (Romans 3:23 KJV),” nobody comes to God on a moral ladder. If you begin with rules, you may produce a polished sinner: new clothes and new vocabulary: yet the same heart. What the sinner needs first is Christ, not religious packaging.
So when you meet a soul, don’t shame him: show him truth with love. Let him see his need, not your superiority. Speak with compassion; you are talking to a man God values, not a nuisance you want to win an argument with. Help him understand that sin separates man from God and that it carries consequences beyond this life. Then present the gospel plainly. Tell him God loves him and that his soul is precious: Jesus paid the price with Himself. The greatest miracle is not that the man behaves well in one night; the miracle is that he enters Christ and becomes new. That is why Scripture says, “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature (2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV).”
Real change starts from inside when Christ comes in, and chains begin to loosen.
Keep your approach simple and solid. Be led by the Holy Spirit: follow your heart; the work is more productive when He is leading. Show love; let your tone communicate that Jesus came to save, not to condemn. Show him his state, preach the gospel clearly, and refuse to major on rules. Don’t start by telling him, “Stop this, stop that,” as if dropping habits is what saves him. Ask the obvious question: “Are you ready to give your life to Jesus now?” When he says yes, lead him to pray sincerely and confess Christ: don’t postpone it till another day. If you will lead him to Christ first, the Holy Ghost will handle the habits you were trying to fix by force.
THOUGHT TO PONDER: Have I been trying to reform sinners instead of leading them to Jesus? Who will I lovingly press for a salvation decision today and then follow up?
PRAYER: Father, give me wisdom and love to present Christ clearly. Let sinners receive Jesus through me and establish new believers in Your house. Amen.
