God has a purpose, a plan and a product in mind when He takes hold of your life. There is something He wants to produce in you, and there is a process designed to bring that product forth. That is what the sonship process is about. Philippians 1:6 says that He which began a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. God does not begin with you and then abandon His work halfway. But you must cooperate with Him. Many believers love the promise of what God will make them, but they resist the process through which He intends to make them. Whenever the process becomes uncomfortable, they conclude that something is wrong and begin looking for an escape. Don’t do that. If God is working on your life, there will be seasons when He confronts attitudes, reactions and weaknesses that you would rather leave untouched. Stay with Him and allow the work to continue.

The sonship process is not always pleasant because formation involves change. James 1:3-4 tells us that the trying of our faith works patience and that patience must have her perfect work so that we may become mature and complete. There are things you cannot learn merely by hearing a sermon or making a New Year resolution. Certain qualities of Christ must be worked into you through obedience, correction, responsibility and situations where your flesh does not get its preferred response. Sometimes God will use a person or a structure that you naturally feel you have a reason to react against. The issue then is not merely what that person did; God may be exposing something in you that cannot go with you into the future He has prepared. If you keep escaping whenever that thing is touched, you may keep meeting the same lesson in another form.

I want you to learn to ask a better question in difficult seasons. Instead of asking only, “Lord, how quickly can I get out of this?” ask, “Father, what are You working into me through this?” Of course, not every painful situation is God’s process, and you must never submit to sin or abuse in the name of sonship. But when God is clearly dealing with your attitude, obedience, pride, impatience or resistance, don’t run away. Let patience have her perfect work. Let the Word expose what needs to change. Let correction produce adjustment. Let responsibility develop capacity. The process may delay your comfort, but it is preparing your future. God is not wasting your time; He is working on His product. Stay under His hand until what He saw when He called you begins to emerge. The son who stays with God’s process becomes the person God can confidently give to His purpose.

THOUGHT TO PONDER

When God’s dealings become uncomfortable, is my first instinct to escape or to learn? What recurring issue in my life may be showing me an area where I have not yet allowed His process to finish?

PRAYER

Father, give me grace to remain under Your hand until Your work in me is complete. Help me not to resist or escape the process You are using to form Christ in me, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR
