Listen while praying, commuting, or preparing for the day.Naaman came looking for healing, but God was dealing with something deeper than leprosy. He was a great man, honourable, mighty in valour and highly regarded, but when he arrived at the house of Elisha, the prophet did not come out to honour his reputation. Instead, a messenger told him to go and wash seven times in Jordan. Second Kings 5:11 says that Naaman became angry because he had already decided how the prophet should respond to him. That reaction exposed something that the leprosy had not removed: pride, expectation and a strong opinion about how he should be treated. God used the problem that brought Naaman to the prophet to bring Naaman face-to-face with Himself. Sometimes what brings you to God is not the only thing God wants to address. You may come because of a crisis, but heaven may see a deeper issue that must be dealt with for your destiny to move forward.
This is one of the great lessons of the sonship process. A man can be successful in many areas and still carry something inside him that will eventually limit what God can do through him. Naaman had stature, connections and military success, but the process touched his nature. God used Naaman’s problem to bring him to the person who held the key to his purpose and to the process through which he could become what God intended. That is why Psalm 139:23 says, “Search me, O God, and know my heart.” There are times when you must stop praying only about what is happening around you and allow God to show you what is happening within you. The presenting problem may be financial, relational, ministerial or professional, while the deeper matter God is confronting may be pride, impatience, independence, fear or stubbornness.
Don’t waste a difficult season by dealing only with the surface. Ask God what He wants you to see. There are problems that will disappear when the deeper lesson has been received, and there are breakthroughs that will not help you if your nature remains unchanged. Naaman almost walked away from his miracle because the process offended his dignity. His servants had to persuade him to obey, and when he finally submitted, his flesh became clean. But something else happened too: he came out of that encounter with a different attitude toward the God of Israel. Let God go beyond the symptom in your life. Give Him permission to search you, correct you and confront what you cannot easily see. The Father is not interested merely in solving your immediate problem; He wants to prepare the son who will safely carry the future beyond that problem.
THOUGHT TO PONDER
Am I focusing so much on the problem before me that I am missing what God wants to change within me? What reaction in this season may be revealing a deeper issue that needs His attention?
PRAYER
Father, search me and show me what You are addressing beyond the problem I can see. Give me humility to submit to Your dealings until both my situation and my nature come into Your order, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
