When God Becomes Your Number One

Another powerful act that moves the hand of God is when a believer truly places God above every other attachment in life. Many people claim that God is important to them, but the true measure of priority is revealed when decisions must be made between God and other interests. When God becomes number one in a person’s life, His will, His Word, and His interests become more important than personal comfort or human approval. David expressed this kind of heart when he said, “Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee” (Psalm 73:25). This statement reflects a heart that recognises God as the ultimate treasure. When a believer lives with this attitude, his actions begin to show that God occupies the highest place in his heart. Such acts attract God’s attention because they reveal genuine devotion rather than casual religious practice.

The Bible provides several examples of people whose actions revealed what truly mattered to them. Esau, for instance, treated his birthright casually and exchanged it for a temporary appetite (Genesis 25:29-34). Jacob, however, valued the birthright because he recognised the spiritual significance attached to it. That desire revealed something deeper in his heart: he placed importance on what God had promised. Though Jacob had many flaws, there was something about his heart that continually moved God toward him. The things of God mattered to him. This illustrates an important truth: God responds to people who demonstrate through their actions that spiritual things matter more to them than temporary benefits. When a believer shows by his choices that God’s promises, purposes, and blessings are valuable to him, it attracts the favour and involvement of heaven.

Many believers struggle in their walk with God because He becomes a last option rather than the first priority. When challenges arise, they explore every other alternative before turning to God. But when a believer truly recognises God as number one, his response becomes different. His first instinct is to seek God’s mind and direction. Such a life sends a powerful message to heaven: that God’s place in that heart is secure and undivided. When God sees that He is genuinely valued above other pursuits, His hand often moves in unusual ways on behalf of that person. Acts that reveal that God occupies the highest place in a believer’s life are powerful triggers that move the hand of God in favour of that believer.

THOUGHT TO PONDER

Do my choices reveal that God truly occupies the highest place in my life? What competing priority must I surrender to place God first?

PRAYER

Father, help me to value You above every other pursuit in my life. Teach me to place Your will, Your Word, and Your purpose above my personal desires, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
