Listen while praying, commuting, or preparing for the day. Many believers unconsciously divide their lives into what they think God considers spiritual and what they think is too ordinary to bring to Him. They can pray passionately about destiny, ministry, usefulness, and fulfilling God’s purpose, but feel almost embarrassed to pray about rent, food, clothing, a job, marriage, or another personal need. You must correct that thinking. Philippians 4:19 says that God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Your personal needs are not an interruption to God. He is interested in the whole of your life. It may sound more spiritual to say, “Lord, use me mightily,” than to say, “Father, I need an apartment,” but God is concerned about both. He is the God of your destiny and the God of your daily life. Do not become so spiritual in your language that you stop being honest with your Heavenly Father about the things you genuinely need.
God knows where you are coming from, where you are now, and where He is taking you. He is not so occupied with your future assignment that He ignores what you need today. You must learn to understand His ways, not merely enjoy His acts. Psalm 103:7 says that He made His ways known unto Moses and His acts unto the children of Israel. There is a difference between receiving something from God and understanding how He works. God often makes you into the person before He gives you the thing that complements what He has made you. He called Abraham a father of many nations before Isaac appeared. In the same way, He may work on your character, capacity, preparation, or positioning while you are praying about a need. So, do not reduce prayer to asking for things; allow God to work in you while you trust Him to provide what is needed.
Bring your real life before God. If you need a job, pray about it. If you need provision, pray. If there is a legitimate need in your family, speak to your Father about it. Do not assume that God will respond faster because you disguise a personal request in religious language. He already knows what you need, and He is good. At the same time, do not become merely need-conscious; seek to understand His ways so that what He gives you can fit properly into what He is making you. God is not only interested in putting something into your hand; He is interested in developing the person who will handle it correctly. Therefore, pray honestly, trust confidently, and cooperate with His dealings. Your Father cares about the details of your life, and it is right for you to expect His involvement in them.
THOUGHT TO PONDER: Are there legitimate personal needs you have neglected because they do not seem “spiritual” enough to pray about? Are you allowing God to prepare you for the things you are asking Him to provide?
PRAYER: Father, thank You for caring about every area of my life. Help me to bring my needs to You confidently and to cooperate with the work You are doing in me as I wait for Your provision, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
