The prayer of faith is one of the ways God brings divine intervention and involvement into your personal affairs. It is the prayer that changes a present condition in line with the revealed will of God. James 5:14–15 shows this clearly in the case of a sick believer: the elders are called, they pray over the person in faith, and the Lord raises him up. However, you must not misunderstand that passage and conclude that only elders or ministers can pray the prayer of faith. That is one of the lies the devil uses to keep believers dependent and weak. Every child of God can grow to the place where he can stand on the Word of God and pray effectively concerning his own life. There may be times when you need the help of mature believers, but you must also develop your own faith and relationship with God.

There is also an important distinction between James 5 and Mark 16:17–18. In Mark 16, Jesus speaks generally about believers laying hands on the sick and seeing them recover, while James 5 addresses the care of a sick believer within the church. You must read the Bible carefully and with the help of the Holy Spirit so that you do not mix principles together. Not every spiritual action should be carried out carelessly or indiscriminately. Laying on of hands is a spiritual transaction, and the believer must learn wisdom in receiving ministry from others. What matters here is that God has not designed the Christian life in such a way that you are helpless whenever a minister is absent. He has given you His Word, His Spirit, and faith so that you can relate with Him personally and bring His power into your circumstances.

Settle this early: the prayer of faith is not reserved for a spiritual elite. It belongs to the believer who understands the will of God and stands on it. When the Word of God has already revealed His position concerning a matter, you are not to pray as though God is undecided. You are to pray with confidence and faith. This is where many believers weaken themselves; they approach God uncertainly in areas where His Word has already spoken. Learn the difference between seeking God’s will and standing on a will already revealed. Submitting a move to another city to God differs from claiming a promise He has already given. The more you understand this, the stronger your prayer life will become. Do not wait for somebody else to exercise faith for you all the time. Grow. Learn the Word. Build your confidence in God. Take your place as a believer and begin to pray with understanding.

THOUGHT TO PONDER: Have you unconsciously believed that effective prayer is mainly for pastors or spiritually stronger believers? In what area do you need to begin standing personally on what God has already revealed in His Word?

PRAYER: Father, help me to grow in the prayer of faith. Deliver me from dependence and uncertainty and teach me to stand confidently on Your revealed will, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
