One of the strongest proofs of the spirit of Timothy was what he sought. Paul said in Philippians 2:21, “For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ’s.” That statement is a serious mirror for every believer. What are you really seeking in the things of God? Are you looking for what will promote your name, increase your comfort, showcase your gift or give you an advantage, or are you genuinely seeking the things that matter to Jesus Christ? Timothy had limitations and weaknesses, yet he became one of Paul’s most trusted sons because his heart was not centred on himself. He had learnt to carry the interests of Christ above personal ambition. This is why sonship is first a matter of spirit before it becomes a matter of assignment. A person can be very active in church and still be seeking his own things through the activity.

The danger of seeking your own things is that you can use spiritual opportunities to pursue carnal goals. A choir member can be more concerned about being noticed than helping people worship. A pastor can become more interested in what he can collect from people than in what God wants to build in them. A worker can choose assignments according to visibility instead of usefulness. That spirit is completely contrary to Timothy. Matthew 6:33 says, “seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness.” The issue is priority. When Christ’s interests become first, your own destiny does not disappear; rather, it becomes safer in God’s hands. Timothy did not lose his future by seeking the things of Jesus Christ. He became an apostolic son, a trusted representative and a man whose life carried proof. The person who continually seeks self eventually becomes smaller than God intended.

Check your motives regularly. Why do you want that position? Why are you unhappy that someone else was chosen? Why does another person’s success trouble you? Why do you serve better when important people are watching? These questions may expose whether self has quietly become the centre. Make a deliberate decision to seek the glory of Jesus above your own. Let His interests matter to you. Let the success of His work give you joy even when your name is not mentioned. Let another person shine if that is what advances His purpose. The spirit of a son does not compete with the Father’s agenda; it loses itself inside it. When God finds someone whose heart is genuinely after His things, He can entrust that person with more because the blessing will not immediately be converted into self-glory. Become that kind of person.

THOUGHT TO PONDER

In my service and ambition, am I truly seeking the things of Jesus Christ or using spiritual opportunities to pursue my own interests? What motive needs to be purified in me today?

PRAYER

Father, purify my motives and deliver me from self-seeking. Let the interests of Jesus Christ become greater in my heart than personal glory, comfort or advantage, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
