Listen while praying, commuting, or preparing for the day.One of the characteristics of a true son is teachability. You must never arrive at a place where nobody can teach you again. Proverbs 9:9 says, “Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser.” Notice that wisdom does not make a man unteachable; true wisdom makes him more willing to learn. The danger of success, age, experience or exposure is that a person can gradually begin to think he has outgrown instruction. He may still listen to sermons, but nothing can correct his judgement anymore. He has an answer for everything. That is not maturity. A son remains teachable because he understands that God is still forming him. There will always be something you do not know, something you have not seen correctly and some area where another person carries light that you need. Don’t allow what you already know to become the enemy of what God still wants to teach you.
Apollos gives us a beautiful picture in Acts 18:24-26. He was eloquent, mighty in the Scriptures and fervent in spirit, yet Aquila and Priscilla took him aside and explained the way of God more perfectly to him. Apollos did not say, “Do you know who I am?” He received what he needed, and his ministry became more accurate. That is the spirit of sonship. The issue is not whether the person teaching you is more famous, older or more educated than you. The question is whether God has put something in that person that you need. Teachability is among the defining qualities of a son because an unteachable person eventually limits his own development. Giftedness cannot compensate for refusal to learn. The moment you become too important to receive instruction, you have placed a ceiling over your growth.
Stay teachable before God, before His Word and before the people He has legitimately placed around your life. Ask questions when you don’t understand. Listen when correction comes. Don’t prepare your defence while someone is still speaking to you. Even when you disagree, examine the matter sincerely before dismissing it. And don’t confuse teachability with gullibility; everything you receive must still agree with Scripture and the Holy Spirit. But let your heart remain open. There are people whose next level is waiting inside an instruction their pride refuses to receive. Make up your mind that as long as you are alive, you will keep learning. The son who remains teachable keeps increasing in wisdom, accuracy and usefulness. Let God always have a way to get new light into your life.
THOUGHT TO PONDER
Have achievement or experience made me harder to teach than I used to be? Who can presently correct my thinking or show me something I have not seen without immediately meeting resistance?
PRAYER
Father, keep my heart humble and teachable. Deliver me from pride in what I already know, and give me grace to receive every truth and correction You send for my growth, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
