One of the laws you must learn in prayer is knowing when to start praying. Many believers do not fail because they never pray; they fail because they begin too late. They wait until a matter has become a crisis before bringing their faith into it. You do not wait until your car runs out of fuel before looking for a filling station; the fuel gauge gives you a warning beforehand. In the same way, problems often give signals before they become emergencies. Trouble has signs, problems have symptoms, and spiritual attacks may give indications before they fully manifest. You must train yourself to respond early. Do not let prayer become what you do after reasoning, skill, connections and every other option have failed. If prayer is your last resort, you may already be fighting a battle that could have been prevented or weakened much earlier.

Mark 4:35–40 gives us a strong picture of this. When the storm filled the boat with water, the disciples woke Jesus in fear. Even with experienced fishermen among them, they needed His help. Their expertise was useful, but it was not enough. Habakkuk 2:4 says that the just shall live by his faith, not by his skill. You will use your education, experience, professional ability and natural wisdom, but you must never put them ahead of faith. The danger of competence is overconfidence. Past success must not persuade you that you can handle the next situation without God. A familiar task still calls for a present exercise of faith. A person may have done something successfully many times and quietly conclude that prayer is unnecessary. That is when the devil can embarrass human expertise. The believer must learn to bring God into matters from the beginning and not merely invite Him after human strength has reached its limit.

Make it your habit to engage your faith early. Before the journey, pray. Before the meeting, pray. Before beginning a major assignment, pray. Before handling a matter, you have successfully handled many times, still acknowledge God. This does not mean you abandon common sense or professional competence; it means you refuse to live by them alone. Bring your preparation and your prayer together, allowing your confidence in God to govern how you use the ability He has given you. Jesus asked the disciples, “How is it that ye have no faith?” because He expected faith to have been present before panic took over. Learn from that. Do not wait until the waves are inside the boat before you remember God. Put your faith at the forefront. Prevention is better and cheaper than cure, and in spiritual matters, early prayer can save you from battles that late prayer may only help you survive.

THOUGHT TO PONDER: Do you usually engage God at the beginning of matters or only when your own efforts begin to fail? In what area of your life has competence quietly replaced dependence on God?

PRAYER: Father, deliver me from making prayer my last resort. Teach me to engage my faith early and to bring You into every matter from the beginning, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
