You must understand that God often begins His work in the invisible before the result appears in the visible. This is why you must not conclude too quickly that nothing happened simply because nothing has changed outwardly. In John 4:51–53, the nobleman learnt from his servants that his son’s fever had left at the exact hour Jesus spoke the Word. He received the news afterwards; the healing had already taken place. This is an important principle in prayer. The answer can be working while the situation still looks unchanged. God knows where the root of a matter is, where its strength is coming from, and where the change must begin. The outward condition does not tell you everything about the work God is doing. Learn to trust what God is doing beyond what your eyes can presently confirm. Your limited view does not limit His ability to answer.

This is why 2 Corinthians 4:18 tells us not to look only at the things which are seen, because the things which are seen are temporal. Faith cannot be built on feelings or immediate appearances. You may feel wonderful after praying today and feel discouraged tomorrow; neither feeling determines whether God heard you. Some people say, “That prayer was powerful,” simply because they felt an atmosphere, yet they have no understanding of what they prayed or what they are standing on. Faith is a spiritual virtue; it does not depend on the senses for confirmation. The question is whether you have approached God according to His Word, not whether the atmosphere excited you. Do not let a change in your feelings persuade you to contradict what you believed in prayer. Rest your confidence on the Father who heard you, even while the answer is beyond your sight.

I once heard of a man of God who prayed for money needed for ministry. The Lord told him, “I have sent the money,” yet physically there was nothing in his hand. Days later, an envelope arrived containing the needed funds, and the date showed that it had been sent on the very day he prayed. God had truly sent it; the manifestation simply took time to reach him. The empty hand did not mean that God had ignored the request. Learn this well: when you have prayed correctly, do not allow doubt to cancel your confidence. Stop saying, “I thought something happened, but nothing happened.” Something may already be moving that you cannot yet see. Rejoice in faith, continue obeying God, and refuse to measure spiritual realities only by physical appearances. When you speak to your Father in faith, understand that He hears you and that His answer can already be on the way.

THOUGHT TO PONDER: Do you judge answered prayer mainly by what you can immediately see or feel? Where do you need to trust that God may already be working beyond your present evidence?

PRAYER: Father, help me to trust Your unseen workings. Deliver me from judging prayer by feelings and appearances and give me confidence to stand until what You have begun becomes visible, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
