Listen while praying, commuting, or preparing for the day.Fatherhood in the Kingdom is not a title that somebody collects, and sonship is not proved by what you call a man. A true father creates an environment that helps a son become what God intends, and sometimes that work includes instruction, correction, standards and uncomfortable dealings. Paul told the Corinthians in 1 Corinthians 4:15, “in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.” He was not claiming ownership of their lives; he was identifying a spiritual responsibility for their formation. The real question is therefore not, “Who do I call father?” but, “Whom has God positioned to help process me into the nature and purpose He has ordained for my life?” That is far deeper than an appellation. It is a relationship of responsibility before God.
This is why a father cannot merely be somebody who praises you, protects your feelings and confirms every decision you make. A father sees beyond your present comfort into the person you must become. Hebrews 12:9 speaks of being “in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live.” God’s fathering has a goal: life, holiness and maturity. He may use spiritual leadership, His Word and other ordained relationships to expose what you cannot see about yourself. If every voice around you only tells you what you want to hear, you are not safe. A genuine fathering relationship gives room for truth to reach you even when the truth is not flattering and when adjustment will cost you something.
Don’t reduce fatherhood to sentiment, proximity or appellation. Ask whether the relationship is helping Christ to be formed in you. Can you receive counsel? Can you be corrected? Can somebody who carries legitimate spiritual responsibility in your life tell you what you need to hear, not merely what you want to hear? At the same time, never surrender your conscience or the authority of Scripture to any human being; every true spiritual father must remain under God and His Word. But don’t use that truth as an excuse for independence or resistance to divine order. God uses people in His process. Honour the fathering relationships He has genuinely ordained and let them serve their divine purpose: not to make you dependent on a man, but to help you become a mature, responsible son who increasingly looks like Jesus and can himself become a safe example to others.
THOUGHT TO PONDER
Have I reduced spiritual fatherhood to language and familiarity instead of allowing it to contribute to my formation? Can the God-ordained voices in my life tell me what I need to hear?
PRAYER
Father, help me to recognise and rightly respond to the relationships You have ordained for my formation. Keep me humble, teachable and submitted to Your Word as You form Christ in me, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
