One of the most important areas of mastery for every believer is prayer. Prayer is not merely a religious activity you perform because you are a Christian; it is something you must understand, learn and become effective in. There are principles that govern prayer, there is faith that must operate in prayer, and there is a partnership with the Holy Spirit that brings accuracy to prayer. The disciples watched Jesus closely and saw a connection between His prayer life and the powerful results that followed His ministry. Interestingly, they did not ask Him to teach them how to preach; they said in Luke 11:1, “Lord, teach us to pray.” That request tells you that prayer can be taught, prayer can be learnt, and prayer can be improved. Settle this from the beginning: merely praying is not enough. You must learn how to pray effectively so that your prayer life becomes increasingly accurate, confident and productive.

There is a God in heaven who answers prayer. In 1 Kings 18, Elijah confronted the prophets of Baal and brought the matter to one simple test: “the God that answereth by fire, let him be God.” The prophets of Baal cried for hours, but there alas; no voice and no answer. Elijah knew that he was dealing with a living God who could respond. Prayer brings the reality of God into your personal experience. It is one thing to hear testimonies of what God did for somebody else; it is another thing entirely to know for yourself that you can speak to God and receive an answer. Answered prayer builds confidence in your relationship with God. When you consistently experience God responding to you, Christianity stops being merely something you inherited, heard about, or observed in another person. You begin to know God personally as your Father who hears you.

Learn to develop confidence in your own relationship with God. It is good to have pastors and other believers who can pray with you, but God does not intend for you to live permanently on somebody else’s prayer life. Every born-again child of God has access to the Father, though not everyone understands or takes advantage of that relationship equally. Do not allow the devil to make you think God answers certain special Christians but ignores you. God is not a respecter of persons. If He has answered another believer, you can learn the principles by which you also approach Him effectively. Make up your mind this month to grow in your understanding of prayer. Learn the laws, develop your faith, become sensitive to the Holy Spirit, practise what you learn, and build confidence in God. Prayer works, and there is a prayer-answering God in heaven.

THOUGHT TO PONDER: Is your confidence in God based mainly on other people’s testimonies, or on your own walk with Him? What must you learn or correct so that your prayer life can become more effective?

PRAYER: Father, teach me to pray effectively. Deliver me from ignorance and empty religious activity and help me to grow into confident fellowship with You and experience answers to prayer, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
