The spirit of sonship is not neutral when the Father’s interests are involved. A true son does not stand at a distance from what matters to his father. In John 2:17, the disciples remembered concerning Jesus, “The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.” Jesus was not merely present in the Father’s house; He carried a jealousy for the Father’s honour. That is one of the clearest marks of sonship. There is a difference between the faithfulness of a servant and the faithfulness of a son. When a need in the father’s house is taken care of by someone else, the servant may feel relieved that he no longer has to do anything; the son may say, “Lord, let it be me next.” Something inside him wants to participate because the matter concerns his father.

Timothy carried this same disposition. Philippians 2:20-21 says Paul had no man likeminded who would naturally care for the state of the believers, because others sought their own things rather than the things of Jesus Christ. Timothy’s care was not forced; it had become natural. That is what sonship does. It moves responsibility from external pressure into internal burden. You do not need to be chased before you care. You do not wait until your name is mentioned before you move. You begin to notice what is lacking, what is hurting the work and what could strengthen the Father’s purpose. Jealousy for the father’s house is evidence of sonship. A son does not merely ask, “What am I entitled to receive here?” He also asks, “What is my father carrying, and what part of it should I carry with him?”

Examine your relationship with God and with the assignments He has connected you to. Are you only present for what you receive, or have the Father’s interests become personal to you? Does the advancement of His Kingdom move you? Does the health of your spiritual house concern you? Do lost souls matter to you? Does disorder in something God has committed to your hands stir you to responsible action? Sonship turns spectators into stakeholders. It does not mean becoming controlling or interfering with everybody’s assignment; it means carrying your own portion with genuine concern. Let the Father’s pleasure matter to you. Let His house matter to you. Let His purposes matter to you. When God finds a son whose heart beats with His interests, He can entrust that son with greater responsibility because He knows the assignment will not be treated as somebody else’s business.

THOUGHT TO PONDER

Do the interests of my Father genuinely move me, or do I only respond when there is something for me to gain? What responsibility in God’s house should I begin to carry with greater personal concern?

PRAYER

Father, put Your interests deeply in my heart. Deliver me from spectator Christianity and make me a son who carries Your burden, honours Your house and advances Your purpose faithfully, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
