Listen while praying, commuting, or preparing for the day. There are things in every believer that must come under the cross if the nature of a true son will rise strongly. Jesus said in Luke 9:23, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” Self-denial is deeper than giving up comfort; it is surrendering the right to govern yourself independently of God. Many believers want God’s purpose, but they still insist on deciding the terms. They want His blessing, but they also want the final say over where they go, how they respond, what they accept and what they refuse. That is where sonship must do its deepest work. A son can have opinions, preferences and desires, but none of them can sit on the throne. The Father must retain the right to lead, interrupt, redirect and correct. Whatever in you continually says, “I must have my way,” must eventually come under the cross.
Paul captures this powerfully in Galatians 2:20: “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.” This is the heart of mature sonship. God is not trying to erase your personality; He is bringing your self-life under the government of Christ. For one person, what must die may be the need to control every outcome. For another, it may be the insistence on being consulted, understood or agreed with before cooperating. Someone else may need to surrender personal ambition, emotional rights, resentment, independence or the determination to protect his own comfort at all costs. These things can look small until God’s instruction crosses them. Then the struggle begins. The cross exposes who is truly in charge. Sonship grows when the answer becomes clear: Christ must rule, even when obedience does not favour self.
Ask yourself plainly: what part of self-government is still resisting the Father? Don’t answer vaguely. Is it your plan? Your timing? Your right to respond the way you feel? Your insistence that God must explain everything before you obey? Whatever refuses divine government will eventually interfere with divine purpose. The cross is not punishment; it is the place where self loses its throne so that Christ can live more fully through you. Make up your mind that you will not carry an independent spirit into your future with God. Let Him govern your choices, reactions, ambitions and relationships. Let Him have the final word. The son God can trust is not the person without a will, but the person whose will has learnt to bow. When self-government dies, the life of Christ becomes freer to express itself through you.
THOUGHT TO PONDER
What area of my life still insists on having the final say instead of yielding to the Father? What right, preference or personal agenda do I need to place deliberately under the cross?
PRAYER
Father, bring every part of my self-life under the government of Christ. Teach me to deny self, surrender my will and allow Jesus to live more fully through me, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
