Listen to this devotional
Listen while praying, commuting, or preparing for the day. There is a difference between being born into a family and becoming the kind of son that can carry the father’s nature, heart and responsibility. That is the burden we will pursue throughout this devotional. Salvation brings you into God’s family, but sonship is the process by which the life of Christ is formed in you until you can represent the Father accurately. Isaiah 9:6 says, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given.” Birth is an event, but sonship is developed. A child may be born in a moment, but a son must grow, learn, submit, mature and become dependable. This is why being born again, glorious as it is, is not the end of God’s work in your life. He has brought you into His family because He intends to form you into the image of His Son and make your life useful to His purpose.
Throughout this devotional, I want you to see sonship as more than a title or church language. It is a spirit, a nature, a process and finally a manifestation. Romans 8:14 says that as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. That means sonship must show in the way you respond to God, to His Word, to correction, to responsibility and to the people He uses in your formation. Joseph manifested sonship when he refused Potiphar’s wife, and he manifested it again when he governed Egypt by divine wisdom. David manifested it when he obeyed his father on an ordinary errand and later stood before Goliath. Timothy manifested it when he sought the things of Jesus Christ and served faithfully with Paul in the gospel. Sonship is not hidden forever; what God forms inside you will eventually appear in how you live and serve.
So, as we begin this journey, do not approach these teachings merely as information to admire. Let the Holy Spirit search you. There are attitudes that must change, reputations that must die, corrections you must receive, responsibilities you must embrace and relationships through which God intends to mature you. Do not resist the process because it is uncomfortable. The Father is not trying to reduce you; He is preparing you to carry what belongs to mature sons. Make up your mind that you will not remain a spiritual child when God is calling you into maturity. Allow Him to make you bendable, teachable, serviceable and dependable. Let the spirit of sonship grow until the Father can trust you with His heart, His inheritance and His assignment. The world is waiting, not merely for more Christians, but for the manifestation of the sons of God.
THOUGHT TO PONDER
Am I merely grateful to be born into God’s family, or am I deliberately cooperating with His process of making me a mature son? What area of my life most needs to come under the Father’s formation?
PRAYER
Father, thank You for bringing me into Your family. As I journey through this devotional, make me a mature son in whom the nature of Christ is formed and through whom Your heart and purpose can be expressed, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
