The prodigal son wasted his substance, and when famine came, he began to be in want. The famine did not create his problem; it exposed the consequences of failing to prepare. Everyone should build savings that can sustain essential responsibilities for at least three months if regular income stops. A person who spends everything because another salary is expected becomes vulnerable to panic, compromise and manipulation. When the job is threatened, fear takes over because there is nothing to fall back on. This is why a strong financial structure is especially important when you begin earning well. A high first salary should not produce a high lifestyle before it produces stability.

Live below your level and begin gathering for future needs before they become emergencies. If school fees will be due in five months, start accumulating now. If you intend to enrol in a course, relocate, buy equipment or meet another major obligation, turn the target into monthly and weekly savings. Do not wait for the deadline and then begin calling people for rescue. Financial goals transform vague intentions into disciplined preparation. You must also define your direct responsibilities. Your spouse and children are direct responsibilities, but you cannot carry every extended-family burden at the cost of destroying your own household. Compassion must operate with wisdom. If you take responsibility for everyone without limits, your own famine may eventually collapse everything you built.

Record every expense. Write down what you spend in restaurants, markets, shops, transport, online transactions, gifts and bills. Many people spend more than they realise because small payments escape attention. At the end of the month, the record will expose the habits, places and relationships that prevent money from staying in your life. Accumulation is not mainly a function of income; it is a function of attitude. Someone earning less may accomplish more because he gathers consistently. Identify your personal scatterers: an addiction, a social group, an appetite, a location or an emotional pattern. Then create a boundary. You were born to do substantial things for God, yourself and your loved ones, but great things are built from smaller things that were preserved. Do not eat the seed meant for tomorrow’s harvest. Prepare before famine, define your responsibilities and let every financial goal begin accumulating long before the day it must be fulfilled. Preparation also protects dignity. It allows you to respond to pressure without begging, lying or entering harmful agreements. A reserve may not remove every difficulty, but it gives you time to pray, think and choose wisely. Financial margin is therefore not merely money; it is protected decision-making space. Let your children also learn preparation by watching you plan calmly before important obligations arrive consistently.

THOUGHT TO PONDER

Could my present savings sustain my essential responsibilities if income stopped? Which known future expense must I begin preparing for now instead of waiting for an emergency?

PRAYER

Lord, give me foresight to prepare before famine appears. Help me to define my responsibilities, control my spending and build reserves that protect my household.
