Every lie is first conceived as a thought before it is spoken with the mouth. Peter asked Ananias, “Why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost?” Satan did not begin by controlling his tongue; he filled his heart with thoughts that Ananias entertained. The land and its proceeds were under his control, but instead of being straightforward, he allowed suggestions concerning fear, money, and self-preservation to run unchecked until deception appeared reasonable. This is why you must guard the gateway of your mind. Thoughts move through the soul just as objects move through the physical environment. You may not stop every thought from passing, but you have authority to decide what will remain, grow, and influence your emotions. Do not permit a poisonous thought to settle merely because it arrived quietly.

The Word of God and the Holy Spirit must become the assessors of every thought. When a thought moves you farther from God, awakens fleshly desires, stirs offence, magnifies suspicion, or presents another person continually in a negative light, do not nurse it. Some people enjoy thoughts that justify their anger. They repeatedly rehearse what another person supposedly meant until offence becomes established, although the original conclusion may be entirely false. A wife can receive a thought against her husband before he returns home, interpret an innocent question through that thought, and begin a quarrel that threatens the peace of the marriage. A church member can assume that a sermon was based on private information supplied by a friend, destroy that relationship, and never realise that the Holy Spirit addressed his secret condition. Satan fills hearts with thoughts so that he can steal, kill, and destroy.

Censor every thought before it hooks itself onto your emotions and begins to dictate your behaviour. Ask: Does this agree with Scripture? Does it produce Christlikeness? Is there evidence for this conclusion, or am I building upon suspicion? Does this thought move me towards truth, love, obedience, and peace, or towards deceit, anger, fear, and separation? Do not blame the devil after you have willingly hosted what he introduced. He is doing his work; you must exercise your authority. Your recreated spirit has received the nature of God, but that nature must be strengthened as you yield to truth. Reject thoughts that prepare excuses for lying, revenge, immorality, gossip, or disobedience. Replace them immediately with what God has said. Be deliberate about what you permit to remain within your mind. The even place begins within. Before your words become crooked and your actions become destructive, a thought has usually shifted your heart. Keep your inward gate under the government of the Spirit of Truth, and Satan will find no room to fill your heart.

THOUGHT TO PONDER: What thoughts have I allowed to shape my emotions towards others? Does my present pattern of thinking agree with God’s Word and produce Christlikeness?

PRAYER: Father, make Your Word and Spirit the guardians of my thoughts. Help me to reject every suggestion of Satan before it corrupts my emotions, words, or actions in Jesus’ name.
