You do not need to lie about your past after you have genuinely received Christ. The new birth does not mean that nothing ever happened; it means that the blood of Jesus has forgiven you and God has given you a new beginning. Some people enter serious relationships carrying important facts that they deliberately conceal. They rename a child as a younger sibling, hide a previous marriage, deny past choices, or project themselves as though they have never made a mistake. They may deceive others for some time, but truth has a way of coming into the light. It is better for someone to reconsider a relationship because you spoke honestly than for a marriage to collapse years later when concealed facts are uncovered. Do not build a new season of your life upon an old matter wrapped in fresh deception.

Paul did not pretend that he had always lived correctly. He openly acknowledged that he had persecuted the Church and described himself as the chief of sinners. However, he did not speak about his past to glorify sin or remain imprisoned by shame; he used it to reveal the exceeding grace of God. His testimony showed that Christ could forgive a persecutor and make an apostle out of him. That is how you must handle your past. Do not conceal what a person with whom you are entering a covenant has a right to know, but neither should you announce private matters indiscriminately to everyone. Truth does not require careless exposure. There is a difference between honesty and broadcasting what the blood of Jesus has covered. Seek sound pastoral guidance, speak to the appropriate person at the appropriate time, and present the truth without excuses, manipulation, or unnecessary details.

Once you have confessed, received forgiveness, made necessary disclosures, and completed whatever godly restoration is required, move forward. Do not repeat your story endlessly as though the blood of Jesus has not worked. The past is past, and you must not allow shame to keep you bowed after God has raised you. At the same time, anyone considering marriage or another serious commitment must learn to recognise genuine transformation. Do not condemn a person whom Christ has forgiven merely because their history is not spotless. Look for present evidence of salvation, truthfulness, stability, and growth. Grace does not erase wisdom, but neither does wisdom cancel redemption. You cannot change yesterday, but you can decide that no lie will enter tomorrow because of it. Let your past magnify God’s mercy rather than become the foundation of continuing deception. Stand in the even place: be truthful about what must be known, discreet about what need not be public, and confident that the grace which saved you is powerful enough to give you a future.

THOUGHT TO PONDER: Am I hiding any important part of my past from someone who has a right to know? Have I received God’s forgiveness enough to move forward without shame?

PRAYER: Father, give me courage and wisdom to handle my past truthfully. Deliver me from deception and shame, and let my life display the transforming power of Your grace in Jesus’ name.
