One practical way to understand sonship is to reverse the position and ask yourself a simple question: if you were the leader, what kind of person would you want beside you? If you were the pastor, what kind of member would make the work easier? If you were the employer, what kind of worker would you trust? If you were the father, what kind of son would bring joy to your heart? In Philippians 2:20-22, Paul could speak confidently about Timothy because there was proof behind his life. Timothy had become the kind of person a leader could entrust with responsibility. He was not merely gifted; his spirit, character and conduct had been tested. Sonship becomes visible when another person can safely place something important in your hands without fearing that selfishness, carelessness or ambition will spoil it.

Luke 6:31 says, “as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.” Apply that principle seriously to your present place. If you were leading the team, would you want someone who arrives late, complains constantly and needs to be chased before every assignment? If you were carrying the vision, would you want someone who disappears when work becomes difficult but appears when recognition comes? If you were the employer, would you want a staff member who only gives his best under supervision? Don’t demand from others what you refuse to become yourself. Timothy became dependable because he allowed the right spirit to be formed in him. His reliability was no longer an occasional performance; it had become part of his nature. That is the level God wants to bring you to.

Make this a personal development principle: become the person you would pray to have around you. If you would want loyalty, practise loyalty. If you would want honesty, be honest. If you would want initiative, stop waiting to be chased. If you would want somebody who protects the assignment instead of promoting himself, become that person. Sonship does not begin by demanding better treatment from everybody around you; it begins by allowing God to make you better. This principle will improve your marriage, work, ministry, friendships and leadership. And one day, when God gives you people to lead, you will understand why He first trained you to serve properly. Timothy became useful to Paul because he allowed God to form in him the qualities that every genuine leader needs around an assignment. Let God make you that kind of son.

THOUGHT TO PONDER

If I were leading someone exactly like me, what would bring me joy and what would frustrate me? What quality I expect from others must I now deliberately develop in myself?

PRAYER

Father, make me the kind of person You and those You place around me can trust. Form in me loyalty, initiative, honesty and genuine care for every assignment You give me, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
