One of Naaman’s greatest problems was not that he refused healing; it was that he wanted healing on his own terms. When Elisha told him to wash seven times in Jordan, Naaman became angry and immediately suggested better rivers. In 2 Kings 5:12 he asked, “Are not Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel?” His argument sounded reasonable, but reasonableness was not the issue. God had chosen Jordan. Sonship means learning that you cannot substitute your preferred process for the process God has prescribed. You may see another route that appears cleaner, faster or more dignified, but if God has not chosen it for you, it cannot produce what His chosen process was designed to produce. A son does not merely ask whether something is good; he asks whether it is what the Father has chosen for him.

This is a major lesson in divine formation. You can only dip where God sends you, not where you choose for yourself. The river was not important because there was some special chemical property in Jordan. What mattered was obedience to the instruction of God. Proverbs 3:5 tells us not to lean on our own understanding. That becomes difficult when our understanding appears superior to what God is asking. Naaman could compare rivers; God was dealing with obedience. Sometimes believers abandon the place God has chosen because another place looks more attractive. They reject an assignment because another one appears more prestigious. They resist the person God is using because somebody else seems more qualified. But sonship is developed when your judgement bows before divine choice. God often puts His treasure inside an instruction that does not appeal to your natural preference.

Don’t redesign God’s process for your life. If He has told you to stay, don’t leave simply because another place looks easier. If He has asked you to serve, don’t demand a platform because you feel qualified for more. If He has sent correction through a particular channel, don’t reject the correction simply because you would have preferred another messenger. Of course, every instruction must agree with Scripture and the Holy Spirit; sonship is never blind submission to error. But once God has made His direction clear, your wisdom is to obey. Naaman entered Jordan angry, but he came out clean. The miracle was waiting on the other side of submission. There are transformations in your life that will only begin when you stop negotiating with the Father and enter the process He has chosen.

THOUGHT TO PONDER

Have I been asking God to use a process I prefer instead of submitting to the one He has chosen? Is there any clear instruction I am resisting because another option looks better to me?

PRAYER

Father, deliver me from leaning on my own understanding. Give me grace to trust Your choices and obey Your instructions until Your intended work is completed in me, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
