One major step into sonship is the destruction of the carnal reputation a person carries about himself. Philippians 2:7 says that Jesus “made himself of no reputation and took upon him the form of a servant.” That does not mean Jesus had no identity or dignity. He knew exactly who He was, but He did not use His identity as an excuse to resist the Father’s will. Many believers are unable to move forward because there is something they keep carrying before God: their age, education, beauty, position, wealth, experience, family background or former status. When an instruction touches that reputation, something rises inside them and says, “Don’t they know who I am?” That question is dangerous in the sonship process. Whatever makes you too important to obey, serve, learn or submit has become an obstacle between you and what God is trying to form in your life.

Paul had credentials he could have carried everywhere. Yet in Philippians 3:7 he said, “what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.” He had to die to one identity to enter fully into another. Reputation and divine power cannot rule together; one must give way to the other. Saul illustrates the danger of preserving reputation. Even after Samuel confronted his disobedience, Saul still wanted Samuel to honour him before the people. He was more concerned about how men saw him than about how God saw him. David responded differently when confronted with sin; he was willing to humble himself before God. Sonship cannot grow where appearance is continually protected above truth. The son is secure enough in his relationship with the Father to admit when he is wrong, to repent, to serve and to take the lower place when God requires it.

Ask yourself what you are still trying to protect. Is there something you have achieved that now makes correction difficult? Is there a title that has made service beneath you? Has success brought you to a place where only certain people can speak into your life? Don’t let reputation become a prison. Your true confidence must come from your relationship with God, your calling and what He has built inside you, not from the paraphernalia surrounding your life. Jesus remained the Son of God even when He was stripped on the cross. Let your identity in the Father become stronger than your need to impress people. Make yourself of no reputation before God, and you will discover that nothing you surrender in obedience can reduce what He has truly called you to become.

THOUGHT TO PONDER

What achievement, title or status makes it difficult for me to take the lower place? Is my reputation before people ever more important to me than God’s pleasure?

PRAYER

Father, deliver me from every reputation that competes with Your will. Let my identity be rooted in You, and give me the humility of Jesus to obey, serve and submit without protecting self, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
