Listen while praying, commuting, or preparing for the day.One of the clearest marks of sonship is the ability to receive correction. Hebrews 12:5 says, “My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him.” Notice that the language of correction is addressed to a son, not to a stranger. God does not correct us because He hates us but because He is committed to what we are becoming. The tragedy is that some believers have developed the habit of running whenever correction comes. They change churches, relationships or assignments because somebody confronted an attitude or behaviour that needed to change. But nobody enters the family of God as a full-grown son. Through correction, chastening, rebuke, counselling and the dealings of the Word, we gradually become responsible and mature. If you avoid every environment where you can be corrected, you may preserve your feelings while damaging your future. Correction is one of God’s instruments for preserving destiny.
The correction of God is not sickness, tragedy or destruction; God corrects His people through His Word. Sometimes the Holy Spirit brings that Word directly to your heart; sometimes it comes through your own spirit, a pastor, a spiritual father or another ministry God uses. The issue is what you do when the correcting Word arrives. Hebrews 12:11 acknowledges that chastening is not pleasant at the moment, but afterwards it yields “the peaceable fruit of righteousness” to those who are exercised by it. If you spend your life fighting every correction, you can also fight the fruit that correction was sent to produce. The discomfort of being corrected is temporary; the character it can produce may preserve your destiny for years. God is interested not merely in making you feel accepted, but in making you increasingly holy, dependable and usable in His hands.
Make up your mind that you will not be uncorrectable. Don’t confuse defensiveness with strength or refusal to listen with maturity. When correction comes, first ask, “Lord, what are You trying to show me?” Examine the matter before defending yourself. If the correction is accurate, receive it and adjust. If something is unclear, seek understanding with humility. Even where the human instrument is imperfect, don’t allow pride to make you miss what God is addressing. A son who can be corrected can be trusted with greater responsibility because the Father knows He can still reach him. Let the Word of God retain the final authority over your life. The goal of correction is not humiliation; it is formation. Stay under God’s dealings until the peaceable fruit of righteousness is visible in your character and let every correction move you closer to the likeness of Jesus.
THOUGHT TO PONDER
What is my instinctive response when I am corrected-humility, defence or withdrawal? Have I ever abandoned a process God was using simply because correction became uncomfortable?
PRAYER
Father, deliver me from pride and defensiveness. Give me a heart that receives Your correction through the Word and responds with humility until the character of Christ is established in me, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
