The moment you begin to judge your Christianity by visible witnesses alone, you are already in danger. A man can behave correctly when people are watching and still be wrong before God. The true test of spiritual health is not only what men can see, but what the invisible witness of your conscience is saying inside you. Your conscience is the eye of God within you, and the eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good. If you only feel guilty when somebody catches you, your conscience is operating at a very low level. A believer must learn to live before God before he lives before men. There are things no usher, pastor, spouse, parent, or colleague may see, but God sees them clearly, and your conscience was given to respond to that unseen presence of God.

Do not build your Christianity on external things. Don’t backslide because one man of God fell, and don’t conclude that a man is spiritually alright merely because signs and wonders follow his ministry. The gifts and calling of God are without repentance, but character is still the proof of a life that is walking with God. We are not following signs and wonders; we are following character. If miracles happen through a man, still check the fruit of his life. Some people got into trouble because they built their faith on what was outside another person instead of building it on Christ and the witness of truth within their own spirit. If your Christianity depends on a leader never failing, you have built wrongly. Let God, His Word, and a living conscience become the foundation of your walk. Honour vessels, but don’t let any vessel replace the standard of God in your heart.

Start dealing with yourself at the level of thoughts. The lowest place your conscience operates is when it waits until an action is visible to others before it corrects you. God hears your thoughts faster than your ear hears your words. The Lord Jesus taught that sin does not begin only when an outward act is completed; it begins when wrong is welcomed and entertained inside. Therefore, trap wrong thoughts early. If bitterness rises, judge it there. If lustful thoughts come, reject them there. If pride begins to speak, answer it there. If falsehood forms in your heart before it reaches your mouth, correct it there. This is how you keep the devil from getting a hold of you. Don’t wait until the deed is done before you repent. Train your conscience to work with God at the invisible level. A man who walks with God in secret will stand strong when he comes into the open.

THOUGHT TO PONDER: Do I live more carefully before men than before God? Is my conscience correcting me at the level of thought or only after outward actions?

PRAYER: Father, help me to honour the invisible witness of my conscience. Teach me to walk before You in secret truth, inward purity, and sincere obedience in Jesus’ name.
