The course of your life is set in motion by what comes out of your mouth. James 3:6 reveals that the tongue “setteth on fire the course of nature”—that means your words ignite cycles in your life, either divine or destructive. Even people in the secular world have a vague sense of this truth. They try to use positive language to describe negative circumstances. For example, they may say, “He’s just under the weather” instead of saying, “He is very sick.” However, no matter how carefully they frame their speech, if they are not born again and speaking the truth of Scripture, their words carry no eternal weight. Only the born-again man has the authority to engage this law of words correctly and walk in its full reality.
God once told me, “You cannot make much progress in life until you master your mouth.” This is a critical truth. Why should a man get married if he hasn’t mastered his mouth? An uncontrolled mouth can destroy a marriage, ruin a home, and wound the soul of children. Many destinies have been derailed because someone, especially a father, ignorantly declared words of destruction without understanding the power of his position and speech. A father who says to his child, “You blockhead of a boy,” is not merely venting frustration—he is programming that child’s future, and many times, the child becomes exactly that.
Words spoken by a father carry spiritual weight far beyond ordinary speech; they have the capacity to direct, limit, or empower the life of that child.
Though many people are born again, they experience delayed progress because of negative utterances from parental figures who misused the office of speech. Even when teachers speak positive words in class, it is the father’s words at home that shape the deepest foundations of a child’s life. Fathers and mothers must learn to speak the words of Scripture over their children. Speak life, speak strength, speak destiny, and speak greatness. If you are in a position of leadership—whether over a home, church, or business—your words must not be careless. Master your mouth. Don’t wait until things collapse before you realise your tongue has been setting the wrong cycles in motion.
THOUGHT TO PONDER: Are your words setting positive cycles in motion for your life and family? What adjustments do you need to make today?
PRAYER: Lord, sanctify my mouth and reverse every negative word I’ve spoken. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
