09 April 2026: THE ACTS THAT SHOW YOUR FEAR OF GOD – Genesis 39:9; Proverbs 9:10

Another act that moves the hand of God positively in a person’s life is the fear of God. The fear of God is not terror or dread; it is reverence: an awareness of God’s greatness that influences the way we live. It is a mindset that constantly evaluates our actions in the light of God’s will. A person who fears God does not merely ask, “Will people see me?” but rather, “How will this affect my relationship with God?” That is why the Bible declares, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10). Without the fear of God, a believer may possess knowledge but lack the wisdom to walk rightly before Him. The fear of God produces a deep consciousness that God is present and attentive to every aspect of our lives. When this awareness governs a person’s heart, it naturally influences behaviour, decisions, and priorities. Such acts of reverence move the hand of God in a favourable direction because they demonstrate that the believer recognises God’s authority and honour in his life.

One of the clearest biblical examples of the fear of God is found in the life of Joseph. When Potiphar’s wife attempted to seduce him, Joseph was alone with her; there was no human witness to restrain him. In that environment, many people would have justified giving in to temptation. But Joseph refused and said, “How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” (Genesis 39:9). Joseph’s decision was not based on fear of punishment from people but on reverence for God. That is the difference between genuine holiness and behaviour controlled by circumstances. Some people behave well only when others are watching, but true reverence for God produces consistent obedience whether anyone is present or not. Joseph’s response was an act that demonstrated his fear of God, and that act moved the hand of God powerfully in his life. Though Joseph suffered temporary injustice, God ultimately elevated him to a position of influence and authority.

Reverence for God may cost you something in the moment, but it always positions your life for divine favour.

The fear of God also helps a believer distinguish between what is sacred and what is common. A person who fears God learns to recognise the things that belong to God and treat them with reverence. This understanding protects a believer from careless attitudes toward spiritual matters. When the fear of God is present, it produces restraint, wisdom, and humility. It reminds us that we are dealing with a holy God whose presence deserves honour and respect. When believers cultivate this reverence in their lives, it shapes their behaviour in ways that attract the favourable hand of God. The believer who fears God does not live recklessly; he walks carefully, conscious that every action should reflect respect for the One he serves.

THOUGHT TO PONDER: Do my private decisions reflect genuine reverence for God? What situation in my life requires me to demonstrate the fear of God today?

PRIÈRE: Father, plant a deep reverence for You in my heart. Help me live with the awareness of Your presence so that my actions consistently honour You, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
