One reason many believers grow discouraged in evangelism is that they treat every rejection as if it is purely intellectual. They give facts, argue doctrines, and push harder, yet the person remains unmoved. Scripture shows us a deeper reality: there is a spiritual battle around the soul. The gospel is “the power of God unto salvation (Romans 1:16 KJV),” but the atmosphere around a person can be thick with deception and pain. Many are defensive because of past wounds, pride, or sinful habits they don’t want exposed. If you meet that wall with mere debate, you end up battling the wrong thing. Prayer breaks the hard ground and makes the heart listen. Intercession turns resistance into receptiveness. Prayer is like ploughing the soil before you plant; it clears the air and makes the seed welcome.
Paul said, “We wrestle not against flesh and blood” (Ephesians 6:12 KJV). The person is not your enemy; the powers influencing darkness are. 2 Corinthians 4:4 KJV explains that “the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not.” So before you try to convince a man, ask God to remove the veil. Pray that light will shine, that conviction will come, and that the Holy Ghost will make the truth clear and desirable. Ask God to open their understanding, to bring them to a moment of honesty, and to send labourers across their path.
When the veil lifts, even a short gospel presentation can pierce the heart.
Practically, build a pre-evangelism habit. Keep a short list of names and pray over them daily; speak God’s Word, bind deception, and ask for open doors and divine appointments. As you go out, whisper prayers in your heart, and after you share, pray again: especially if the person hesitates. Follow up with a warm message, offer to answer questions, and invite them into simple next steps: a call, a meeting, or a Bible study. If the resistance is strong, involve a prayer partner and add moments of fasting. Keep a simple record of who you spoke with and when to check back, and celebrate small progress: one question, one openness, one willingness to pray. Keep notes and follow up; discipleship begins with consistency. Even if they refuse today, keep praying; God can arrange another encounter.
THOUGHT TO PONDER: Have I relied on arguments more than intercession? Who will I pray for by name today, and what resistance must be broken?
PRIÈRE: Father, in Jesus’ name, open blinded eyes and break satanic resistance over the lost around me. Fill me with love, boldness, and wisdom, and confirm Your word with conviction. Amen.
