08 February 2026: DON’T ABANDON THE CONVERT AT THE ALTAR – Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 14:21-22

It is good to snatch a man from the pit, but it is cruel to leave him by the roadside bleeding. Many believers enjoy the excitement of the sinner’s prayer, but they don’t enjoy the labour of “teaching them to observe (Matthew 28:20 KJV).” Jesus didn’t send you to gather decisions; He sent you to make disciples. The Apostles didn’t preach and disappear, they went back, confirming souls and exhorting them to continue in the faith. A soul is not fully won because he confessed Christ once; he must be grounded in Christ and in church life. Soul winning is like delivery; follow-up is like nursing. If you abandon the baby on the altar, don’t be shocked when the devil picks him up. A neglected convert becomes a confused orphan.

Discipleship is every believer’s mandate, not only the Pastor’s. God holds you accountable for what people around you become when they take you as their model, and even for the opinion of God they form by observing your life. There are levels: sometimes it is indirect: people watch you because they don’t know what to do; sometimes it is direct: you led them to Christ, so you must disciple them; sometimes it is assigned: souls are handed to you. In every case, your target is integration into the Body: visitation, sharing, and joining; Christ-centred, not you. Practical discipleship has simple channels: visitation (steady contact: daily at first, then consistently), sharing (pour what you know in small, digestible portions), and joining (connect him to believers and to the local assembly).

Once a sinner is saved, welcome him well to the family of God and explain the implications of their decision and start follow-up immediately.

Teach him the daily growth pillars: Bible, prayer, fellowship, and testimony; get him into believer’s class and ensure he continues. Call, visit, and pray for him until the next fellowship day and beyond; know where he lives, who influences him, and help him drop “friends in sin” for “friends in Christ.” Always keep a simple follow-up record; answer questions; refer hard matters; avoid opposite-sex follow-up alone. Ask questions, deal with doubts, and point him to simple Scriptures for assurance. Don’t make him dependent on your personality; make him dependent on the Word and the Holy Spirit. When he can stand, let him start winning others too.

THOUGHT TO PONDER: Am I discipling my converts or abandoning them after the sinner’s prayer? What one follow-up action will I take today: visit, call, or invite: to help a new believer get rooted in Christ?

PRIÈRE: Lord, make me faithful in follow-up. Help me nurture new believers into stable disciples who love Your Word and Your church, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
