One of the greatest gifts God gave man is counsel. The Bible says, “Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety” (Proverbs 11:14). Many young people despise counsel because they want independence. However, independence without guidance is the highway to destruction. Marriage is too weighty a decision to handle alone. When you isolate yourself and insist, “I know what I am doing,” you are already deceived. Proverbs 15:22 says, “Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.” Counsel does not reduce you; it preserves you. A voice of experience can see the trap your excitement is hiding from you. To ignore godly counsel is to write an invitation letter to regret.
Don’t confuse counsel with opinion. Not every voice qualifies to speak into your destiny. Your friends on social media cannot see your tomorrow. Your unbelieving relatives cannot interpret God’s vision for your life. Counsel must come from voices aligned with your purpose—pastors, spiritual parents, and mentors who have walked the road ahead. Even in the Bible, great men and women submitted to counsel. Moses listened to Jethro; Ruth listened to Naomi; Timothy listened to Paul. None of them became smaller because they obeyed counsel; they became stronger. If you think you are wiser than everyone, it is pride disguised as confidence. Pride has ruined more marriages than poverty ever did.
God gives shepherds as His instrument of safety; rejecting them is rejecting His protection.
To apply this truth in your life: (1) Identify who has God’s authority to speak into your choice of marriage. Don’t assume; be deliberate. (2) Weigh counsel with the Word of God. Any voice that contradicts Scripture is noise, not counsel. (3) Learn to test your conviction with spiritual authority over you. If you are defensive and angry when corrected, you are not ready for marriage. (4) Counsel is not control; it is confirmation. God will use your counsellors to affirm or check what He is already saying. (5) Be humble enough to stop if counsel says, “This is not God.” The pain of stopping now is smaller than the pain of regretting later. I decree over you today: you will not ignore the voice of safety; the Lord will surround you with wise counsellors; and your ears will hear truth that preserves your destiny.
THOUGHT TO PONDER: Do I treat godly counsel as optional advice or as divine safety? Who has the right to check my decisions before they become irreversible mistakes?
PRIÈRE: Lord, surround me with wise counsellors, and give me humility to heed Your voice through them for the preservation of my destiny.
